Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) Fellowship at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland is an ACGME accredited training program that offers graduates from both Pediatric and Emergency Medicine residencies, a comprehensive experience designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge they require to become outstanding academic leaders in the field of PEM.
Fellowship Program History
The PEM fellowship program was originally established in 1987 at what was formerly known as Children’s Hospital Oakland. In 2014, Children’s Hospital Oakland and the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Benioff Children’s Hospital began a formal affiliation that has allowed the fellowship program to utilize site-specific resources to optimize the opportunities available to our fellows. This partnership extends our fellows’ clinical, educational and administrative responsibilities, and enhances our scholarship mission by creating a more diverse and robust training program.
PEM Fellowship Goals
The primary objective of the program is to train our fellows for full-time faculty positions in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. We place an emphasis on academic training that prepares our fellows to:
- Provide excellent patient care
- Acquire a comprehensive knowledge of pediatric emergency medicine and its related fields
- Develop the knowledge and skills to conduct independent research
- Learn how to design and implement Quality Improvement strategies
- Understand how to competently administer pediatric emergency medicine programs
