OBJECTIVES
This symposium will enable the practitioner to:
- Apply evidence-based strategies to recognize and manage skin-related complications in patients with or at risk for metabolic syndrome.
- Recognize dermatologic signs and symptoms that may indicate underlying nutritional deficiencies, such as changes in skin, hair, and nails.
- Differentiate between typical picky eating and feeding disorders that may require further evaluation or intervention.
- Recognize the clinical signs, symptoms, and diagnostic approaches to common vitamin deficiencies and
- Develop individualized nutrition counseling strategies that promote long-term lifestyle change and support healthy weight maintenance.
- Describe the impact of spiritual and cultural beliefs on dietary practices and nutrition-related health outcomes.
- Implement culturally sensitive nutritional interventions and resources to improve health equity and support the well-being of immigrant patients.
- Interpret current diagnostic criteria and guidelines for the evaluation and staging of metabolic liver disease.
- Review the physiological roles and recommended daily allowances of essential, and in some cases, fat- and water-soluble, vitamins and minerals.
- Identify common pathogens responsible for foodborne illnesses and their typical sources, clinical presentations, and incubation periods.
- Explain the pathophysiology of insulin resistance and its role in the development of metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
- Review the current landscape of pharmacological agents approved for weight management in pediatric and adolescent populations.
- Apply evidence-based guidelines for the management of lipid disorders through lifestyle modification and pharmacologic therapy.
- Explain the role of nutrition as a therapeutic tool in the prevention and management of chronic diseases.
- Integrate advances in population health through communicable disease prevention and control using a health equity lens.
