Medical Student Program

Each year, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland (BCH Oakland) provides pediatric training to over 140 medical students from medical schools throughout the United States.

This training occurs at many different levels:

  • Fourth-year medical students from schools throughout the country come to Children's for pediatric clerkships and sub-internships. They work closely with our residents and other trainees.
  • Third-year medical students from UCSF receive their 8-week core pediatric clerkship training with us, rotating through primary care and the general pediatric wards.
  • Under the guidance of our teaching faculty, several groups of first- and second-year medical students from both the UCSF School of Medicine and UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program learn their pediatric physical diagnosis skills at our hospital.
  • Visiting medical students work on clinical and basic science research projects with our faculty.

Pediatric Clerkships for Fourth-Year Students

Advanced Pediatric Clerkships - Course Descriptions 2024

For fourth-year medical students desiring an elective or sub-internship experience, BCH Oakland offers a variety of clinical clerkships. In addition to providing an excellent educational experience, these one-month rotations allow prospective applicants the opportunity to see our residency training program firsthand.

Medical students function under the direct supervision of a senior resident and attending physician and assist in the initial diagnostic approach and treatment plan for patients.

Students receive instruction in the specific diagnostic and therapeutic techniques performed on the rotation and are given responsibility commensurate with their interest, level of training and experience.

They participate actively in team rounds, case conferences, seminars and other formal teaching sessions.

We offer 15 pediatric clerkship positions each month in the following areas:

  • Adolescent Medicine
  • Ambulatory Pediatrics
  • Cardiology
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Hematology/Oncology
  • Infectious Disease
  • Inpatient Wards
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • Neurology
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
