Scholarly Concentrations and GME Pathways

Our residency program leadership team works with residents to develop individual concentrations for those that are interested.

Scholarly Concentrations

Scholarly Concentrations offer residents the chance to customize their curriculum, focusing on developing expertise in a field of their choice. Each of the scholarly concentrations focuses on patient-centered care and professional development, offering opportunities to explore specialized areas of clinical medicine and community health.

For an area of interest to become a formal scholarly concentration, it should include the following required components:
Clinical Experience
Scholarly Project (quality improvement, research, curriculum development, community engagement)
Education (audience can include community members, fellow residents, students)

Examples of Concentrations include (but are not limited to):

Care for the Newborn/NICU
Care for Justice Impacted Patients
Concordant Care
Critical Care/Hospital Medicine
Complex Care/Rehabilitation
Gender Affirming Care
Lifestyle Medicine/Nutrition
Medical Education
Integrative Medicine
Integrative Medicine
School-based Health
Substance Use Disorder

Community-Engaged Leadership and Advocacy Concentration (CELA)

This scholarly concentration is designed to help pediatric residents develop the leadership, advocacy and community partnership skills to drive meaningful change in their communities. This two-year program includes a foundational curriculum for all residents, while offering an optional deeper dive through a concentration for those interested in community-engaged projects.
Residents will explore topics such as leadership, equity, and power dynamics while engaging with local organizations to create impact, They will also complete a scholarly project in partnership with a community partner. Residents participating in the concentration will benefit from seminars, mentorship, and a hands-on immersive elective, with opportunities to practice cultural humility, co-create solutions, and advocate for systemic change.

GME Pathways

Residents can also participate in one of the UCSF GME Pathways--a multidisciplinary inter-professional program open to UCSF learners at all training levels.
