How to Apply

ERAS Application

All applications to the Pediatric Residency Program at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland are processed through the Electronic Resident Application System (ERAS).  Applicants register with ERAS through their medical schools, complete the ERAS application, and choose to send an application to "UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland."

All applications are reviewed comprehensively and there is no cut-off for testing or rotation scores. UCSF does not use race, gender, sex, or other protected categories or proxies for protected categories in the selection process.

Applications are considered complete when they include three letters of recommendation and a Medical Student Performance Evaulation (MSPE) in addition to all parts of the standard ERAS application.

Applicants must have successfully completed USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX 1 to apply to the program. It is strongly recommended that applicants complete USMLE Step 2 CK or COMLEX 2 early enough to ensure passing scores are available for review by mid-February.

Applicant Review and Interview Process

Once ERAS opens, we conduct a comprehensive review of completed applications. Applicants are notified via email if they are selected for interviews so be sure to indicate your preferred email address on your ERAS application.

The AAMC, in collaboration with the AMA and NRMP, has recommended that all GME programs conduct virtual interviews for all applicants for the 2025-2026 interview season. They discourage hybrid interviewing to ensure fairness, and minimize inequity and stress among applicants.  Our program abides by these recommendations and interviews are conducted virtually from late October to mid December.

Applicant Interview Days consist of an information session (with program directors and a chief resident with time for Q&A), two interviews (with faculty, alumni, or residents), and a wrap up session with residents.

Applicants are also welcome to attend virtual social events and/or Open House evenings.

For 2025-26, our program is participating in the NRMP Early Lock Pilot for Pediatrics and we will lock our rank list by February 9th and then be able to offer Virtual and In-person Second Look events.

In March, applicants and programs are informed of the Match results by the NRMP.

Please note, if you are a graduate of a medical or osteopathic school other than those in the US or Canada, you must follow different procedures before applying to the program.
